6 Things to Do on a Day Trip To Cambridge

Being an Oxfordian, I cannot not have a thing against Cambridge – you just develop the OxBridge competition without even realizing. But no doubt, Cambridge is a beautiful town, a little boring and less happening (compared to Oxford), but beautiful.

So if you have one day in this town, it is enough if toured correctly.

1. Punting on the River Cam

Going to Cambridge and not punting will not be fair to Cambridge. It feels as if the town was designed to be explored while punting.

2. Visit the University Colleges

The university has 31 colleges, so the university grounds cannot be missed!

3. Visit the churches and chapels

Cambridge is home to some of England’s most beautiful churches and chapels. If not the others, you cannot afford to miss King’s College Chapel, a true masterpiece of English craftsmanship.

4. Explore Cambridge on foot

Walk around and capture that magnificent architecture, and walk in those cobble-stoned paths this town has both in your mind and in your camera!

5. Check out the museums

You will not be able to study the museum artifacts in a day, but you can enjoy the samples! Head to the Fitzwilliam Museum where you can see more than half a million works of art, or check out the Museum of Cambridge, set in a 17th-century building. Or maybe spend some time at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology where you can see world-class art and artifacts from all over the world.

6. Head to the market square

How can you travel and not shop? From Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, the market square has stalls of books, music, films, clothes, jewellery, fresh food, second-hand bikes, plants, accessories, and much more.

Sundays (again 10am to 4pm) gives you food fests, arts & crafts market, sells organic produce from local farmers and work from some of the region’s most talented artists, craftsmen, potters, sculptors and photographers.

How to get to Cambridge: There is a shuttle bus that takes you from the Park-and-Ride on the M11 into town. There are trains to Cambridge from London King’s Cross meanwhile other lines depart from London Liverpool Street. The National Express offers coach services as well.
